Who We Are
Formed in May 2008 where there was a recognised need to help migrants settle in the area. There are over 50 different ethnic groups identified living the Waitaki District. The WMC is a non-profit organisation with a vibrant executive committee and pro-active volunteers who are working collaboratively to address identified needs of migrant communities. A Migrant Support Coordinator and Newcomers Network Coordinator are employed by the Waitaki Multicultural Council to carry out the day-to-day work of supporting migrants and newcomers.

Our Mission
Whiria te Tāngata – Weave the People Together to create a multicultural community of people living in harmony.
Our goal is to reduce challenges for people who are new to Waitaki and to increase their capabilities to transition and settle successfully in their new home environment.
Vision Statement
All newcomers, migrants and refugees are well supported, successfully settled and well accepted in multicultural Waitaki
Aims and Objectives
- To promote the welfare, culture, interests and identity of the multi ethnic community in the District.
- To promote goodwill and understanding between the ethnic and local communities through contacts, interactions, festivals, activities and general support.
- To advocate for ethnic community interests.
- To embrace New Zealand's heritage and culture while maintaining and promoting individual ethnic cultures and heritage.
- To foster goodwill between the Council and other organisations.
- To assist members integrate within the local community.
Our Activities
- Promoting cultural diversity through community events
- Hosting monthly social gatherings, including shared/pot luck meal. Speakers and activities
- Facilitating regular activities for women & youth
- Holding monthly meetings with speakers
- Providing information about services in the Waitaki District
- Providing Migrant Support Services such as advocacy, assistance completing application forms, liaising with government departments and community groups
- Providing Newcomer’s Activities such as a fortnightly coffee morning monthly lunches out, quiz and games evenings, social nights and garden tours.
